It's My WPPI! (And It's Your WPPI too!)

This time of year isn't just for the Super Bowl, hot apple cider, and new fitness aspirations. In the photo industry, the winter months are prime conference time!

Having recently returned from SWPP in London, I'll soon be boarding another plane and heading west to Vegas for WPPI. This year is ultra exciting as my Master Class (limited to only 35 people) has been bumped up to a Platform Class which means we'll have more room for more people who want to get a grip on their workflow and embrace InDesign! Wahoo!

If you've never been to WPPI before, you're in for a treat! With more than 15,000 photographers in one place, you know it's going to be a good time! Just remember to wear comfortable shoes! :)

My class is on the schedule for Tuesday, Feb.  21st, 3:30-5:30pm and I hope to see you there!

Another Way I Use InDesign

Those of you who know me know that I'm an InDesign evangelist at heart, singing its praises to anyone who will listen (photographers—that's YOU!). Not only do I use InDesign to build all of my contracts, pricing guides, and wedding albums, but I use it to build my presentations too.

Say what?

That's right. I use it to build my presentations. Whether for a webinar or a platform class at WPPI (coming this February!), I build all my slide decks in InDesign.

Why not Power Point or Keynote? If you're familiar with InDesign, you know nothing compares to the speed and efficiency you get for quickly building and editing layouts. And since slide decks are nothing more than a collection of horizontal layouts, I use InDesign just as I would for laying out a wedding album.

Most of the time, I export the finished presentation to PDF and then present from the PDF itself (if you press cmd+L on a mac it makes the PDF full screen), using the same arrow keys, mouse clicks, or remote to advance the slides. But if I want to take advantage of Keynote's "presenter mode" where I can see a preview of the next slide before it appears, then... well... I have to use Keynote.

Messing around in Keynote for the first time, I found it frustrating, so I swore I'd figure out a better way, and I'm happy to say—I did. And here's how: I build my presentation in InDesign as usual, but instead of exporting to pdf, I export each page (slide) to jpg, and batch import them into Keynote. That's it.

Here's a quick video to demonstrate. :) PS: Obviously, if you want to embed videos and other special effects, your keynote presentation will require additional tweaking. But for the simple and clean presentations I do most the time, this works like a charm!

What 'Cha Want?

Happy holiday Monday! :) I'm getting ready to prep the blog for when I'm on the road for 2.5 months with The [UN]tour, and wondered what posts you'd like to see while I'm gone. In other words, I'm taking requests, so bring it on! :)

In the meantime, Emir and I have been busy over at The [UN]tour blog sharing lots of photos, videos, and posts about our adventures training for our upcoming trip. We look forward to sharing the fun with everyone!

Breaking News: The [UN]tour Is Officially Happening!

It's happening. I mean, it's really happening! Beginning in October, Emir and I will be taking this party on the road, embarking on a cross-country mission to educate and inspire everyone with a camera. The catch? We'll be riding coast to coast from California to Florida—on our bicycles.

Yep. I said bicycles.

We'll be offering two very magical classes along our way. One geared for professionals, and one available to anyone who wants to learn how to use their camera to improve their photos.

You can follow along (and join us if you're along our route!) on our brand spankin' new website where the FAQ section will answer all your burning questions about why we're doing this, how many miles we'll be riding each day, the specifics of our route, where we'll be sleeping at night (hint: rarely in a hotel!), and why we're calling it The [UN]tour.

Needless to say, this will be quite the challenge! Once we start pedaling, we will definitely welcome any comments or words of encouragement via the [UN]tour blog, our Facebook Page, and twitter. (Have you seen the elevation climb waiting for us immediately outside of San Diego? Gulp!)

We can't wait for you to join us!

PS: If you're local in Lincoln, Nebraska—join us for a special edition of the camera class that inspired the book, that partly inspired the tour! Mark Wednesday, Oct. 5th from 5-9pm on your calendar and contact SCC at 402-437-2700 and reference course #LLLX-0528-CEFA to sign up!

What Can Mascara Teach Us About Business?

The last time you went shopping for mascara... did you feel as confused and overwhelmed as I did? Yikes! We seem to be suffering from a plague of sorts in our society. It's known as the "Over Abundance of Choice," and it tends to drowns us on a daily basis... even when shopping for something completely mundane and ordinary... like mascara.

While at a photo conference in Las Vegas recently, I found myself at the CVS along the strip and couldn't resist documenting this outrageous collection simple products used to extenuate eyelashes. The sales clerk laughed along with me as I pulled out my camera and started capturing the different choices.

Voluminous mascara, lengthening mascara, voluminous & lengthening... in one. There were shimmering mascaras, water-proof options, and mascaras that provide 'lash definition.' With names like "Colossal," "Falsies," or my personal favorite, "Stiletto," they all sounded... kinda the same. There's even nutritional mascara which claims to make  your lashes "soft and healthy."

Some brands promised 11x the volume or claimed to increase length up to 85% (though I'm not sure I could see, let alone hold up my eyelids if my lashes suddenly became 11x heavier and 85% longer). Remember a year or so ago when one of the companies had actually produced a battery powered mascara with a vibrating wand? I laughed out loud when I saw the commercial for that one... (who wants vibrating pointy objects near their eyes?) which curiously, was nowhere to be seen on the Vegas shelves. You can, however,  still find telescopic "Last Explosion" wands that appear to posses magical powers of some sort...

(These photos represent only a small sampling of what was available... as there were so many, I actually got bored photographing them...)

The kicker is... they all basically do the same thing.

What you may or may not have realized, is we have a very real problem on our hands. All of this choice is actually becoming problematic, as discussed in the article, "The Tyranny of Choice" or in the TedTalk video with Dr. Barry Schwartz, referring to the notion that less is  more in what he calls "The Paradox of Choice."

There is substantial research showing that too much choice actually prevents us from being able to make decisions (on everything from shampoo to mascara... to 401(k) investment options), and tends to diminish our overall satisfaction (regardless of the outcome) if/when we finally do make some sort of decision.

When I stumbled across some of this research, I was actually... thrilled. I had been feeling like our society's tendency towards an over abundance of choice was bordering on burdensome rather than liberating for quite some time... and felt avenged to know I wasn't nuts... that there were other people who felt this way, along with research to back it up.

Of course, that's not to say that no choice would be any better. Somewhere out there is a middle ground... but we seem to have lost sight of it in blind pursuit of limitless options.

Over the past two years, with this gut feeling (and now solid research in mind), I've made several very conscious choices in the way that I run my business to ensure that it's easy for my clients to have a great experience and feel completely satisfied with the end result, all in record time.

The only real choice they have to make, is to hire me in the first place. From there, the rest is easy. You can read all about it in my recently released ebook, "A Guide to a Wickedly Fast Wedding Workflow." In fact, you can even download a sample chapter if you'd like. (PLUS--> now through Sunday Feb. 27th, you can save 20% with the discount code: WICKEDFAST)

With my workflow and business philosophy completely redefined, I'm proud to say that all of my 2010 wedding clients received their wedding photo proofs and album designs within one week of their wedding.

Less fuss, more satisfaction and time to enjoy it. :)

Ch-Ch-Ch-Chilly

With temperatures poised to plunge dramatically this weekend... I find myself almost feeling nostalgic for the hot days of summer when humidity was thick enough to occasionally fog up my camera lenses. Almost. This image was shot in Miami, whose humidity makes Nebraska's look like small potatoes! (Of course, it's much more tolerable when you have the beach at your beck and call... :)

Pumpkin Patch Frolic

I've been following this family for the past year... since lil' Kylan was just a bun in the oven, and I look forward to seeing them each and every time. This shoot was the third in a series we planned to capture Kylan's first year. At her newborn shoot, we decided that sometime in the fall of 2010, we'd reconnect at a pumpkin patch for her 1 year session... and here we are! I loved so many of these images... the only way to make a post of a reasonable size was to blog board them... Kylan's bunny face & Kamryn's missing teeth were not to be excluded! :)

Isn't that family shot at the end priceless? Ha ha ha!

Class of 2011: Carly

It's always an honor when a family I've worked with before comes back for more KaBloom fun. :) Carly is the second Cannon daughter I've had the honor of photographing, and she brought older sister Lauren along with her... which made for a mini-reunion! All three of us had a ball running around town, finding just the right spots for Carly to shine... thanks for being so great ladies!
